Die MUSIKWERKSTATT WIEN wurde 1995 von Mag. Anna-Maria Birnbauer und Huw Rhys James gegründet, um die Weiterentwicklung der zeitgenössischen Musik, insbesondere des zeitgenössischen Musiktheaters, zu fördern und mitzugestalten, sowie Musik und Oper des Barocks zu pflegen und wiederzubeleben. Sie ist ein Ort der Begegnung von bereits etablierter mit junger Kunst, ein Forum des Austausches von Erfahrung und Experiment, von Tradition und Avantgarde. Als "Werkstatt" soll sie die erste Adresse sein, um in einem gemeinsamen Arbeitsprozeß mit Komponisten und Autoren neues Musiktheater für das Publikum unserer Zeit entstehen zu lassen. Dabei bedeutet Oper für uns ein Gesamterlebnis, das die Phantasie und die Emotionen des Publikums weckt und beflügelt. Auf der Suche nach immer neuen Herausforderungen auf musikalischem Gebiet konnte sich die Musikwerkstatt Wien ein breites Spektrum verschiedenster Stilrichtungen erarbeiten. Ihr Repertoire umfasst von der Spätromantik bis zum Minimalismus und der Polyrhythmik alle Musikrichtungen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Musikwerkstatt Wien hat die Möglichkeit, für jede Produktion einen passenden Veranstaltungsort zu wählen. In der Einbeziehung der individuellen Kraft dieser Spielräume und im phantasievoll-ästhetischen Lichtdesign liegen daher die Besonderheiten ihrer szenischen Arbeit. Durch ihre kontinuierliche Arbeit konnte sich die Musikwerkstatt Wien in den letzten Jahren als eines der führenden Ensembles für zeitgenössisches Musiktheater in Österreich etablieren. Ihr erfolgreiches Engagement für die Moderne führte 1999 zur Einladung, die Oper "Der Zerrissene" gemeinsam mit der Volksoper Wien und der Wiener Staatsoper zu produzieren.

MAG. ANNA-MARIA BIRNBAUER, Generalsekretärin
Anna-Maria Birnbauer, geboren in Wien, studierte an der Wiener Musikhochschule Gesang und war Solistin am Wiener Raimundtheater. Seit 1991 ist sie Mitglied der Wiener Staatsoper. 1995 gründete sie gemeinsam mit Huw Rhys James die Musikwerkstatt Wien, deren Intendantin sie seitdem ist. Seit 2002 ist sie Produktionsleiterin des Festivals Mozart in Reinsberg. Sie sang für die Musikwerkstatt Wien u. a. die Frau in „La Voix Humaine“, die Rolle der Madeleine in „The Fall of the House of Usher“ und trat bei Konzerten im In- und Ausland auf.

HUW RHYS JAMES, Künstlerischer Leiter
Huw Rhys James wurde in Großbritannien geboren und studierte Germanistik und Politikwissenschaften an der University of Bristol. Es folgte ein Studium an der Wiener Musikhochschule. Nach Engagements bei den Vereinigten Bühnen Wien, der Wiener Staatsoper und dem Linzer Landestheater war er 2002 Mitglied der Wiener Volksoper, wo er unter anderem "My Fair Lady", "Der Konsul", "Don Pasquale" und "L’Elisir d’Amore" dirigiert hat. Seit 2002 ist er Professor für Partiturspiel und Korrepetition, sowie Leiter des Jugendkammerorchesters am Konservatorium der Stadt Wien. 1999 debütierte er als Dirigent im Wiener Konzerthaus. 1997 war Huw Rhys James Assistent von Chordirektor Prof. Norbert Balatsch bei den Bayreuther Festspielen und seit 1997 ist er künstlerischer Leiter der Wiener Tonkunstvereinigung, ein Ensemble, das sich Kirchenmusik aus der Wiener Klassik und Romantik widmet. Im Rahmen seiner Tätigkeit als Künstlerischer Leiter der Musikwerkstatt Wien hat er „The Fall of the House of Usher“ (Philip Glass), „Weiße Rose“ (Udo Zimmermann), „Der Zerrissene“ (Gottfried von Einem) – Koproduktion mit der Wiener Volksoper und Staatsoper Wien, und „Powder Her Face“ (Thomas Adès), sowie „Orlando“ und „Tamerlano“ von G. F. Händel dirigiert. 2001 gründete er das Barockorchester Musica Poetica Wien.

The MUSIKWERKSTATT WIEN (Vienna Music Workshop) was founded in 1995 by Mag. Anna-Maria Birnbauer and Huw Rhys James to foster the development of contemporary music and in particular contemporary music theatre in Austria, as well as to promote and revive the works of Austrian composers of the Baroque period. In the short time since its foundation, the Vienna Music Workshop has established itself as one of the most innovative and imaginative ensembles for contemporary music theatre in Austria. We see ourselves as a forum where old and young art, experience and experiment, tradition and avantgarde can meet in a fruitful exchange. The success of this policy was rewarded in 1999 when the Vienna Music Workshop was invited to co-produce "Der Zerrissene" with the Vienna State Opera and Víenna Volksoper. Inga Levant's and Nigel Lowery's production of Param Vir's double bill was further confirmation of the Vienna Music Workshop's ability to attract top international talent. In the next few years the Vienna Music Workshop intends to contribute to the development of music theatre in Austria through a closer co-operation with young Austrian authors and composers. As a "workshop" we want to be a synonym for a joint working process aimed at producing new music theatre works for the audience of our time. Opera for us is an all-embracing experience that should seek to awaken and liberate the audience's emotions and imaginaton. The Vienna Music Workshop has no theatre of its own, preferring to choose a venue appropriate to the needs of each individual work. Harnessing the architectural energy of the chosen arena and combining it with a psychologically motivated lighting design is an essential feature of our production style. Our repertoire ranges from the late romantic, Viennese sound of Gottfried von Einem to the modernism of Philip Glass and his young indian-born colleague Param Vir.

MAG. ANNA-MARIA BIRNBAUER
Anna-Maria Birnbauer was born in Vienna, studied singing at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik and was a soloist at the Raimundtheater, Vienna. Since 1991 she has been a member of the Vienna State Opera. In 1995 together with Huw Rhys James she founded the Musikwerkstatt Wien. Since 2002 she has been Production Manager for the Festival Mozart in Reinsberg. For the Musikwerkstatt Wien she sang Poulenc's "La Voix Humaine" and Madeleine in "The Fall of the House of Usher". She is an acomplished Lied and Oratorio singer and has performed both in Austria and abroad.

HUW RHYS JAMES
Huw Rhys James was born in Great Britain and after gaining a BA in German and Politics at Bristol University, studied Piano and Composition at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik. After engagements at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna State Opera and the Linzer Landestheater he joined the staff of the Vienna Volksoper in 1994. At the Volksoper he has conducted amongst other works "My Fair Lady", "The Consul", "Don Pasquale" and "L'Elisir d'Amore". In 1999 he gave his conducting debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus. In 2002 he became Professor at the Vienna Conservatoire, where he directs the Youth Chamber Orchestra. At the 1997 Bayreuth Festival James was Assistent to Chorus Director Norbert Balatsch. Since 1997 he has been artistic director of the Wiener Tonkunstvereinigung, an ensemble dedicated to performing the church music of the Vienna classical and Romantic period. In the course of his activities as founder and artistic director of the VIENNA MUSIC WORKSHOP he has performed Philip Glass's "The Fall of the House of Usher", U. Zimmermann's "Weisse Rose", G. v. Einem's "Der Zerrissene" (Co-production with the Vienna State Opera and Vienna Volksoper) as well as Thomas Ades` Powder Her Face, and Handel`s “Orlando” and “Tamerlano” (first Austrian performances). In 2001 fe founded the baraoque orchestra Musica Poetica Vienna.
